250 Jamaican breadfruit saplings donated to Bahamas!

In the prolonged effort to reduce food dependency and poverty in the Caribbean, a large amount of Jamaican-grown breadfruit saplings were donated to Bahamas to fuel an increase in local produce in the Caribbean island. The donation, received by the Ministry of Environment and Housing in Bahamas, was facilitated by American non-profit organization, Trees That Feed Foundation, and made possible by Portland farmer Alfred McLean and a banana nursery in Denbigh, Clarendon.

The saplings are intended to assist in the reforestation of certain public areas in the Bahamas, and are expected to yield about 200 breadfruits over the next few years.

Job creation in both Caribbean islands is an additional benefit of the partnership between Jamaica's breadfruit industry and the Bahamian government. It is this model of agricultural give and take that other Caribbean nations intend to regurgitate to encourage food security in the region.
